i tried to color in photoshop again. I think i am slowly getting better, but i wish i would improve faster, (oh well, practice, practice, practice) if anyone knows of any good online tutorial for coloring metal, lights and or smoke in photoshop, please let me know.
clokwerk goblins are fun to draw, but a biznatch to color. these little fella's are tinkers in the campaign setting i'm working on called "gaslamps and gunpowder." If you want to see a fun little cartoon i did of a clokwerk gobbo, then check this out: [link] |

one tip i can give you though, is to try and not use smudge, i know that little tool looks like sugar, it gives a real quick result taht satisfies the mind easely, like "ha look what i made with photoshop!" but in the end it will look a lot better if you just draw the smoke manually. smudge just... well i dont know, it just looks awckward.
another one i can give you, is to never color on a white background. Things will come to life a lot easyer if you just make a nice color layer with the paint bucket, or even a gradient of you feel genorous (i prefer the bucket yes), it makes it easyer to find the right contrast ranges.
What i also find nice to work with for coloring, is 50% opicity (or a little less, but never under 35) brushes. You can layer colors and color intensities over eachother real easely, and then press the alt key to pop your eyedropper, select a midtone you just crated on your canvas, and continue with that. Start big, and slowly work into details over the entire piece.
That'll be enough for the say.
